Festival of the Plain is a registered charitable trust and was established to help with raising funds for the development of a children's playground in Mosgiel.

When the new playground was completed the Trust held their inaugural Party in the Park. This event was introduced for people to come along, bring a picnic, enjoy entertainment and activities in a family-friendly atmosphere at no cost. There were also stalls, food and side-show rides.

Party in the Park was then included into the launch of an annual festival week of events to showcase the Taieri and Mosgiel area. Other events and activities that have been held in previous Festival of the Plain weeks are Wings on Wheels, Quarter Mile Sprint, quiz nights, film nights, wood chopping competition, garden walks and a celebrity debate.
